It’s time to get back together…

Although we can still not gather in person as members of the Church of the Good Shepherd, it is time to start gathering as a community, beyond our Sunday worship, in whatever method is available. Fortunately, we do have virtual methods to gather, learn, interact, and effectively provide each other that very important sense of community.

We will be having at least one training session on how to utilize the Zoom format offered by our own Matt Johnson, dates to follow. We hope this training helps both group leaders and participants receive the information you need to allow you to have a positive experience.

Once we are all Zoom savvy, we will hopefully, by mid-August, resume and complete Sacred Ground. The participants in each of the three groups will be receiving information regarding your group’s startup date, link etc. We are also going to attempt to include a session 11 where all 3 groups will virtually come together to discuss “what’s next” regarding Anti-Racism.

The Sunday morning Bible Study, normally led by Albert Ervin, will be resuming to allow this enthusiastic group to continue in a virtual format; date not yet determined.

Christian Essentials is a NEW opportunity for small groups to “explore, grow and deepen your relationship with God, neighbor, world and self.” There are 5 different Modules available (you can participate in one or more of these Modules, as you wish), and each module consists of six sessions. The first Module beginning in late September will be “Love God,” and the six sessions consist of Introduction, Worship, Bible Study, Spiritual Practices, Basics of Our Faith, and Stewardship. (In the future we hope to offer the other four Modules, which include Care for Each Other, Serve The World, and more.) The groups are limited to 12 or fewer participants, so there will be 1 or 2 groups depending on how many sign-up. To provide us with this opportunity, four of our members have received training and will be facilitating: Nan Bayless is our lead facilitator, assisted by Britt Myers. The additional facilitators are Mary Palmer and Emily Bondy.

We are also going to have a Virtual Welcome Home — more information will follow on this as we finalize our plans.

I hope that your will find something in these offering that will spark your interest. Please contact me, Mary Palmer,, if you have interest in leading another Study Group.

A Message from Our Bishops

Worship Moratorium Extended

In the bishops’ reopening plan (available here), there are several Public Health Indicators (PHI) required to move from Stage 1 to Stage 2:

sufficient PPE is available.

  • Rates of cases, hospitalizations and deaths are declining,
  • testing and tracing are available, and
  • sufficient PPE is available.

In North Carolina, we have exceeded the goals set by the state health department (NC DHHS) for testing/tracing (PHI 2) and PPE (PHI 3), but the rates of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are not yet declining (the latest metrics from NC DHHS are available here). Since it is not likely that goal 1 will be met by July 1st as we had hoped, the bishops have delayed the resumption of public worship. As soon as a date has been decided, we’ll let you know.

Sunday Worship Live Stream

To help us join together as the Body of Christ while we stay at home, we’ll continue to live stream our service each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (the prelude begins around 10:25 a.m.) for as long as the moratorium on pubic worship is in effect. To tune in to the live stream or to watch recordings of previous services, click here or visit

The service leaflet is available here.

New Director of the Good Shepherd Day School

Please welcome Ms. Sandra Munford, who has been called to serve as the new Director of the Good Shepherd Day School.

Ms. Sandra comes to us with nearly forty years of experience in early childhood education. After thirty years as owner and operator of Williams Daycare, Ms. Sandra decided to return to school, and she earned a bachelor’s degree in child/family services and computer science then a master’s degree in Education and Cultural Diversity. While completing her degrees, she also worked as a teacher at Chosen Generation Daycare, and most recently she taught in the Head Start program at A. J. Richardson (NEED) Inc.

While Ms. Sandra settles in, Katharina Johnson, who has been serving as the Day School’s interim director since January, will remain on the school’s staff to oversee the transition. Over the next several weeks Katharina will also begin resuming her duties as the church’s Director of Christian Education.

Of all Good Shepherd’s ministries, the Day School has the greatest impact on Rocky Mount, and the wardens and rector are excited to welcome Ms. Sandra for this new chapter on our journey.

Coronavirus Resources from the Diocese of N.C.

The coronavirus, or COVID-19, is a global pandemic that has created a world and situation unlike any we have known before. We continue to know this is understandably a cause for concern, but still not a cause for panic. It is an opportunity for all of us to go deeper into our faith to find ways to love and support one another. We are in this together, and we are beloved community.

Palm Sunday Worship

The live stream of Good Shepherd’s Palm Sunday service will be available here on April 5th at 10:30 a.m.. The service leaflet is available here.

Since we’re not able to distribute palms for Palm Sunday, the bishops have encouraged us to use other greens, plants, and paper palms during the Palm Sunday liturgy (you can read their message here). When Matt blesses the palms at the beginning of the service, yours will be blessed as well.

Click here for a palm picture that you can print on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper and here for instructions on how to make a palm cross.
